Para o fim de semana XIII - Happy 4th of July

Hoje celebra-se o "Independence Day".

No dia 4 de Julho de 1776 as 13 colónias proclamaram que não faziam parte do Império Britânico.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

II Parte - Do Direito de Resistência

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. III Parte - Acusações ao Rei Jorge

Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

IV Parte - Desilusão com a atitude do Império

Uma história bonita - A morte de John Adams, um dos Founding Fathers e segundo Presidente dos EUA

On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Adams died at his home in Quincy. His last words are often quoted as "Thomas Jefferson survives." Only the words "Thomas Jefferson" were clearly intelligible, however.

Adams was unaware that Jefferson, his compatriot in their quest for independence, then great political rival, then later friend and correspondent, had died a few hours earlier on the very same day.

o psico tem muitos admiradores dos processos políticos norte-americanos.
Uns mais empenhados e conhecedores que outros, mas quase todos fãs da forma (eu diria) liberal como se faz política nos EUA.

É natural que depois isso se reflicta nos posts.

Meus caros,

Compreendo naturalmente a referência aos fenómenos, mas não compreendo, a por vezes evidente, subserviência cultural a que assisto aqui.

Não vi aqui qualquer referência à comemoração do dia de Portugal no passado 10 de Junho.

Mas por mim tudo ok. Só não me parece é que o 4 de Julho não merece a importância que lhe dão, passando-se o mesmo com as eleições americanas e o sistema político com que os tipos do outro lado do Atlântico se desgovernam!

Ó Guida, porque é de tamanha importância o dia de Masturbação Nacional Americano, vulgo, 4 de Julho, para o Mundo?

Já agora, para mim, e como já disse várias vezes, as eleições Americanas são uma live sitcom ;)

E antes de cairem em cima do Arede, reflitam no que diz o rapaz!

Pode-se gostar, ou não, de algumas opções políticas daquela republica em questão.
Pode-se gostar, ou não, da forma como conduzem a sua economia. Pode-se gostar, ou não, da forma como por vezes se "desgovernam"...

Mas uma coisa não podemos ignorar:
Aquelas 13 colonias reconheceram coisas que são por demais evidentes!
Existe um conjunto de direitos inalienávies e perante a lei somos iguais. O "Estado" existe para o cidadão e não o contrário. As pessoas são livres de fazerem as suas escolhas sem terem um "Estado" por detrás a ditar como o devem fazer. As comunidades saberão melhor que burocratas como se governarem... este é o espirito da declaração e, goste-se ou não dos EUA, faz sentido!

Que em Portugal o cidadão sirva o "Estado" e o cidadão não o conteste é que é triste...

É verdade: a declaração era omissa em relação a negros e mulheres - embora Jefferson na versão original o tenha mencionado.

Mas a verdade é que, goste-se ou não dos EUA, foi aquele documento que deu poder a um presidente para por fim à escravatura [republicano curiosamente ;)]. Foi o mesmo documento que permitiu que Martin Luther King, Malcom X, entre muitos outros, tivessem palco para avançar com o movimento das "civil liberties". Foi o mesmo documento que permitiu às sufragistas conquistarem o voto.

A verdade é que, goste-se ou não, aquele país funciona! Não é perfeito obviamente, mas nada nesta terra o é... Pode-se não gostar do Bush, ou de alguma classe média americana, que para os padrões europeus pode ser "provinciana" ou "burra", mas a declaração encerra uma verdade intemporal: Somos livres e essa liberdade é um direito inalienavel que nem um "Estado" tem o direito de nos retirar!

Já desde os tempos de Julio César se dizia que nos confins da Peninsula Ibérica existe um povo que não se sabe governar nem se deixa governar

Rebater tudo o que dizes tomar-me-ia muito tempo que agora não tenho, mas deixa-me que te diga uma coisa: o quero dizer é que me estou marimbando para o governo ou desgoverno dos EUA, porque acho muito mais importante o que cá se passa!

Seja como for, naturalmente que os EUA têm virtudes. Tal como tem a revolução francesa, o 5 de Outubro o 25 de Abril, a revolução russa e por aí fora!

Agora, subserviência cultural é que não!

Agora, reconheço o mérito da declaração e a importancia da data para o mundo... e por vezes não percebo certos "anti-americanismos", que coloco no mesmo patamar da subserviencia cultural...

Caro Filipe, não estás a ser propriamente rigoroso quando dizes “não compreendo, a por vezes evidente, subserviência cultural a que assisto aqui.”

- Eu, por exemplo, acho a sociedade americana cultural e intelectualmente muito fraca. Avanço tecnológico não é sinónimo de desenvoltura cultural.
- Apesar de achar os americanos politicamente adultos em algumas matérias (como na independência dos “militantes” face às cúpulas dos partidos), considero os políticos demasiado pragmáticos para o meu gosto. E tenho-o dito quando falo, nomeadamente, do Obama.
- Não seguimos mais a vida política norte-americana que a generalidade dos média, sendo certo que seguimos também, a título de exemplo, a espanhola (que o diga o Psico-Convidado Polvo).
- O grande mote das psico-discussões é Portugal e os Portugueses, em todos os seus pormenores. Isso não significa, no entanto, que abordemos todos os seus feriados. Por vezes, usamos temas marginais para trazer à baila os nossos símbolos. Veja-se o post da Tânia sobre La Lys, ou do Né sobre o “Dia da Raça”.
- Falamos também muito sobre Europa, nomeadamente um dos pontos que muito te agrada discutir, o Federalismo.

Dou-te razão quando dizes que levamos algumas discussões sobre os EUA ao exagero, o que pode indiciar endeusamento. Relembro-te, porém, que levamos quase tudo ao “exagero”. Temos psicóticos e comentadores demasiado argumentativos, quiçá belicistas, para não ser assim ;)

O detalhe exaustivo que tu (e o Né) fazem das eleições americanas, com as suas (mais do que evidente) implicações a nível mundial, explicam a importância que um "4 de Julho" teve para os EUA e para os Estados Democráticos do lado de cá do Atlântico.
